Phrasal verbs – series 4 – A Day of Unexpected Events
  1. go in – enter a place

    • Example: I forgot my key, so I couldn’t go in.

  2. turn off – stop a machine or device / make someone lose interest

    • Example: Please turn off the lights before leaving.

    • Example: His rude behavior really turned me off.

  3. run out – use all of something so that none is left

    • Example: We ran out of milk, so I need to buy some.

  4. hold out – extend something forward / continue despite difficulties

    • Example: He held out his hand to help me.

    • Example: They held out for three days without food.

  5. walk out – leave suddenly due to anger or disagreement

    • Example: She walked out of the meeting when they refused to listen to her ideas.

  6. turn on – start a machine / suddenly attack or criticize someone

    • Example: He turned on the TV to watch the news.

    • Example: She suddenly turned on her friend and started yelling.

  7. give up – stop trying / surrender

    • Example: Don’t give up on your dreams!

  8. make up – invent / reconcile after a fight

    • Example: He made up a story about why he was late.

    • Example: They argued but later made up.

  9. figure out – find the solution to a problem

    • Example: I finally figured out how to solve this puzzle.

  10. let out – allow someone to leave / make a loud noise

  • Example: The teacher let the students out early.

  • Example: He let out a loud scream when he saw the spider.

  • Example: I looked over my notes before the test.

  1. cut off – interrupt or stop / disconnect

  • Example: The storm cut off electricity to the whole town.

  • Example: He cut me off while I was speaking.

  1. hang up – end a phone call

  • Example: She was so angry that she hung up on me.

  1. get in – enter a place or vehicle

  • Example: I got in the taxi and gave the driver my address.

  1. pull up – stop a vehicle

  • Example: The car pulled up in front of the house.
