Dialogue 1: At Work

James sat at his desk, staring at the unfinished report. He had made several attempts at analyzing the financial data, but each time he ran into a difficulty in reconciling the numbers. The data from two departments didn’t match, and that caused a serious delay in completing the project.

When his manager, Laura, walked by, she noticed his frustration. “James,” she said gently, “don’t be discouraged by this temporary failure at finishing the task. I’ve seen your earlier reports, and you usually have great success at finding solutions.”

James sighed. “I appreciate that, but I felt real anger at myself yesterday when I discovered yet another mistake. I know there’s a responsibility for accuracy here, and I don’t want to let the team down.”

Laura smiled. “We all feel surprise at setbacks, but they’re normal. Let’s take a fresh look at the data together. Sometimes all it takes is a new perspective.”

They reviewed the figures side by side. After a few minutes, Laura made a quick guess at the source of the problem — a miscalculation in one column. James laughed nervously, relieved. “I can’t believe I didn’t spot that earlier. Thanks for giving me another shot at correcting this.”

Laura nodded. “Remember, each obstacle is just another chance at growth. Keep your belief in your skills strong.”
